Fino alla Dissoluzione dei Monasteri, Steeple Ashton era un feudo dell'Abbazia di Romsey, al centro dei vasti possessi dell'abbazia nella zona. Faceva anche parte del distretto di Whorwellsdown ed era il luogo dei tribunali del distretto.
Il primo elemento del nome del villaggio potrebbe rappresentare un antica guglia della chiesa. Tuttavia, il prefisso "Staple" o "Steeple-" a volte indica il privilegio di tenere un mercato, con un stapol o palo messo in piedi per pubblicizzare la sua posizione a tutti coloro che passano. Steeple Ashton era infatti una città di mercato, avendo ricevuto il permesso di tenere un mercato settimanale nel 1266; una croce di mercato si erge ancora sulla verde del villaggio.
