Swansea è una città costiera di 169 880 abitanti e anche una contea del Galles meridionale, ad est della penisola di Gower. È la seconda città del Galles per numero di abitanti.
Crebbe di importanza durante il XVIII e XIX secolo, divenendo un importante centro industriale. Fu una delle prime località dotate di una tranvia a cavalli. Non subì un'ondata immigratoria pari a quella di Cardiff e mantenne sempre uno stretto legame con le origini e i dintorni rurali. Un'elevata percentuale di abitanti parla ancora il gallese . Secondo le stime del 2003 la popolazione ammonta a circa 169 000 persone.
