Una storia particolare sulla chiesa racconta che durante un attacco pirata nel Medioevo, le suore che vivevano nel monastero dovettero fuggire. Una suora rimase indietro e pregò la Vergine Maria di salvarla. In quel momento, la roccia su cui si trova il monastero si spezzò in due, facendo cadere i pirati in mare. Questo spiega, secondo la tradizione locale, perché la chiesa si trovi su una sorta di isolotto separato dalla terraferma da un stretto lembo d'acqua.
