Il primo teatro permanente nella Grecia moderna era stato il Teatro Boukoura dal 1840, ma aveva difficoltà a gestire la propria operazione e rimase vuoto per lunghi periodi di tempo. Si decise di fondare il Teatro Nazionale di Grecia nel 1880, con una sovvenzione del re Giorgio I e di Efstratios Rallis per dare al teatro una sede permanente ad Atene. Le fondamenta per questo nuovo progetto furono poste in via Agiou Konstantinou e l'edificio stesso fu progettato dal famoso architetto sassone noto per molti altri edifici pubblici ad Atene all'epoca, Ernst Ziller. Nonostante i problemi per completare l'edificio in tempo, esso fu infine completato alla fine degli anni '90 e nel 1900 fu inaugurato come Teatro Reale. Angelos Vlachos fu nominato Direttore.
