Il vulcano Methana consiste in un complesso di dome di lava basaltico-andesitico a riodacite che forma la penisola di Methana nel Golfo Sarronico, sul lato nord-est del Peloponneso. La parte più antica del complesso risale a un intervallo di tempo compreso tra 900.000 e 550.000 anni fa, sebbene l'attività possa essere iniziata durante il tardo Pliocene. Una fase più giovane di attività si è verificata circa 380.000-290.000 anni fa, formando una serie di dome di lava e colate. Il dome più giovane, Kameno Vouno, sul lato nord-ovest della penisola, è stato formato nel III secolo a.C. e ha prodotto una colata di lava che si è spostata 500 m oltre la costa. Sorgenti termali si trovano in diverse località lungo la costa della penisola.
