Nel combattimento l'esercito tebano comandato da Pelopida, numericamente inferiore, fu attaccato da un esercito spartano, che si ritirava dopo uno scontro avvenuto precedentemente ad Orcomeno, ma nonostante la disparità delle forze riuscì ad avere la meglio su quest'ultimo, mettendolo in fuga.
