Il Forte Knockalla è una delle diverse batterie napoleoniche costruite lungo le coste di Lough Swilly nella contea di Donegal, per difendere il nord-ovest dell'Irlanda. Faceva parte di un progetto per fortificare Lough Swilly e Lough Foyle contro l'invasione francese durante le guerre rivoluzionarie e napoleoniche ed è stato completato tra il 1812 e il 1813. Dall'altra parte del Lough si trova il Forte Dunree. Il forte è stato costruito sul sito di una fortificazione temporanea costruita per la prima volta nel 1798.
