L'Università di Limerick è stata fondata nel 1972 come Istituto Nazionale per l'Educazione Superiore ed è diventata università per statuto nel 1989, secondo quanto stabilito nel University of Limerick Act.
L'Università di Limerick è stata la prima università irlandese istituita dopo la fondazione, nel 1922, dello Stato della Repubblica d'Irlanda. Anche la Dublin City University fu istituita nello stesso giorno, immediatamente dopo l'Università di Limerick.
