Pur estendendosi su di un territorio pianeggiante, il comune di Fombio è leggermente sollevato rispetto alla pianura che lo separa da Piacenza.
Anche se storicamente il luogo è stato molto legato al Po, oggi il letto del Grande Fiume scorre ad alcuni chilometri di distanza dal centro del paese.
