Il nucleo urbano di Fondi è situato nel Sud pontino a circa 60 km a sud di Latina e a metà strada tra Roma e Napoli. L'omonima piana si distende ai piedi dei Monti Aurunci e Ausoni, che la chiudono su tre lati, ed è aperta a sud verso il mar Tirreno. I rilievi circostanti, culminanti nel Monte delle Fate e nel monte Calvilli , alimentano le falde idriche della piana, che risulta ricchissima di acqua, come testimonia la presenza di oltre venti sorgenti e tre laghi. Tale abbondanza idrica ha reso necessarie periodiche opere di bonifica, che si conclusero solo nella prima metà del Novecento, per trasformare gradualmente il territorio paludoso in una fertile zona agricola.
