Il toponimo dialettale Carlaç, poi italianizzato in Carlazzo parrebbe derivare dal latino medievale castellaceum, derivato da castrum , con la "s" mutata in "r" per un fenomeno di dissimilazione. Nello specifico, il nome deriverebbe da una torre di segnalazione chiamata Castrum ratii. Buona prova dell'origine per dissimilazione da castrum è l'esistenza della frazione Castello, che effettivamente ospita i resti di una fortificazione, e dalla estesa presenza del cognome Castelli nella zona.
