Gli stanziamenti umani nel territorio di Cargeghe in epoca preistorica sono documentati dalla presenza di alcuni nuraghi quali Cherchizzos e Santa Maria, inoltre avanzi di un nuraghe sono visibili nel centro storico del paese, come tramandato anche da una fonte parrocchiale ottocentesca relativa alla leggendaria Tres Nuraghes. Numerose sono le domus de janas del territorio tra cui la necropoli di S'Elighe Entosu - spicca la domus IV detta “delle spirali” - e quelle a prospetto architettonico di Pescialzu.
