Situato nel basso Salento, a 57 km dal capoluogo, comprende anche la frazione di Montesardo e la località costiera di Marina di Novaglie. In passato ricoprì un ruolo preminente su tutto il Capo di Leuca; fu sede di diocesi fino al 1818 e capoluogo di contea. Fa parte dell'Unione dei comuni Terra di Leuca. Dal 2016 fa parte dell'associazione Borghi Autentici d'Italia
