Importante centro di antiche tradizioni mercantili e agricole, è essenzialmente dedito al terziario. Il comune, al centro di un reticolo viario nel Tavoliere settentrionale, ha un'ampia estensione territoriale. È città d'arte.
La città sorge nel settore nord del Tavoliere ad una altitudine di 86 m s.l.m.. Confina con Apricena a nord, Rignano Garganico a est, Foggia e Lucera a sud, Torremaggiore e San Paolo di Civitate a ovest. San Severo è il trentaduesimo comune italiano per estensione territoriale e il nono della Puglia.
