È un comune della bassa parmense, a 25 km a ovest di Parma; si trova in prossimità dell'autostrada A1 e a pochi chilometri dalla via Emilia, in piena pianura Padana.
Il territorio corrispondente all'odierna Fontanellato risultava abitato già durante l'età del bronzo, come dimostrato dagli studi compiuti da Luigi Pigorini alla fine del XIX secolo.
