Il Santuario di San Romedio si sviluppò da chiesetta a popolare santuario di pellegrinaggio e basilica del Santuario di San Romedio. San Romedio visse nel IV secolo. Era figlio del conte tirolese di Thaur, ma si ritirò in una grotta rocciosa per meditare. Dopo la morte dei genitori, donò tutti i suoi averi e si stabilì in Val di Non in Trentino.
Romedio è spesso collegato a un orso. La storia narra che il suo cavallo fu sbranato da un orso selvatico. L'orso divenne docile e portò Romedio in groppa fino a Trento. In ricordo di questa leggenda, nel 1958 il senatore Gallarati Scotti, membro onorario del comitato per la fondazione del World Wildlife Fund in Italia, acquistò Charlie, un orso destinato ad essere ucciso, e lo donò al Santuario di San Romedio, in Valle di Non.
