Il titolo cardinalizio di San Corbiniano è stato eretto da papa Benedetto XVI con la bolla Purpuratis Patribus del 20 novembre 2010. Insiste sulla nuova chiesa parrocchiale di San Corbiniano in via Karl Orff , la cui dedicazione è un omaggio allo stesso Benedetto XVI, per iniziativa del cardinale Friedrich Wetter, arcivescovo emerito di Monaco e Frisinga. Nello stemma del papa è infatti raffigurato l'orso di san Corbiniano.
Curiosamente alla data di erezione del titolo la chiesa non era ancora stata consacrata, perché in costruzione. È stato lo stesso papa a consacrare la chiesa di San Corbiniano il 20 marzo 2011.
