Il porto di Livorno, situato secondo alcune convenzioni sul Mar Ligure o, secondo altre, sul Tirreno, è il principale porto della Toscana ed uno dei più importanti porti italiani e dell'intero Mar Mediterraneo, sia per il traffico passeggeri che, soprattutto, per quello merci .
Lo scalo livornese in origine era posto ai margini di Porto Pisano, il complesso sistema portuale che si estendeva tra l'allora villaggio labronico e Pisa. Con il lento decadimento della Repubblica pisana e la sempre più scarsa manutenzione per le sue strutture portuali, la piccola insenatura posta presso Livorno assunse maggiore rilevanza.
