Piazza XX Settembre si trova all'altezza del Ponte di Mezzo e si affaccia su Piazza Garibaldi dall'altra parte del fiume.
A sinistra di piazza XX Settembre (con le spalle alle Logge di Banchi) si trova Palazzo Gambacorti (sede del comune): pregevole edificio gotico pisano con doppio ordine di bifore e iscrizioni e stemmi che ornano la facciata.
L'edificio è oggi sede del comune, motivo per cui la piazza è chiamata dai Pisani Piazza del Comune.
Dall'atrio della piazza si accede al cortile, con colonne con capitelli del XV secolo e pareti decorate con stemmi delle magistrature.
Sulla sinistra è la torre con l'orologio del Palazzo Pretorio dove oggi ha sede la Biblioteca comunale.
