Il 25 agosto 1818, Johannes van den Bosch posò la prima pietra per la prima casa dei coloni nei terreni incolti del comune di Vledder nel sud-ovest del Drenthe. Era la realizzazione delle idee illuministiche del diciottesimo secolo e dei sogni romantici del diciannovesimo secolo che animavano Johannes van den Bosch. Negli anni successivi al periodo francese, vide come la povertà aumentasse.
Nel novembre del 1818, arrivò il primo gruppo di coloni, composto da 52 famiglie con 100 adulti e 230 bambini. La prima colonia fu chiamata Frederiksoord, in onore del protettore principe Frederik, il secondo figlio del re Guglielmo I, colonnello generale dell'esercito e noto per la sua generosità.
