Per via della sua università e della sua vita culturale, Groninga è considerata la più importante città dei Paesi Bassi settentrionali. Essa è anche nota come Stad e Groot Loug . Gli abitanti di Groninga sono chiamati Stadjers , anche per contrasto con la regione circostante, essenzialmente agricola.
