Hornhuizen è un villaggio nel comune di Het Hogeland nella provincia olandese di Groninga. Il villaggio ha circa 120 abitanti. Hornhuizen è probabilmente nato come un insediamento secondario del villaggio scomparso De Houw nel parrocchia di Leens. Le prime menzioni sono Howerahusum, Horahusum, Horhusum e Hoerhusen. Hornhuizen significa probabilmente 'le nuove case di De Houw' e quindi non: 'case nell'angolo', come spesso si pensa. Secondo un'altra spiegazione, il nome potrebbe contenere la parola antica frisone hore. La Cronaca di Bloemhof riporta che nel 1247 la chiesa di Howerahusum fu data alle fiamme. Questo avvenne chiaramente nell'ambito di una faida durata anni a Hunsingo, in cui una parte ricevette supporto da Groninga e Middag-Humsterland, mentre l'altra poteva contare sull'aiuto di Fivelingo, Drenthe e Vredewold.
