Per contrastare l'erosione, sono state piantate siepi nelle pendici disboscate utilizzate come terreno agricolo nel Sud-Limburgo. Grazie alla piantumazione di siepi è stato bloccato il materiale del suolo che scorreva. Poiché il materiale si accumulava contro le siepi e il materiale si lavava via dietro di esse, nel tempo sono emerse fosse o bordi ripidi (nel Sud-Limburgo chiamati anche graaf o hellingknik), che dividono le pendici argillose nel paesaggio collinare del Limburgo in terrazze meno ripide.
Dalla metà del 19° secolo molte fosse sono scomparse a causa della concentrazione e dell'ingrandimento dei lotti. A volte la posizione di una fosse precedente è ancora riconoscibile da un bordo scosceso in un appezzamento. Spesso le fosse sono state completamente dissodate.
