Nel 1886 iniziò la costruzione della nuova Chiesa di San Bavo, che fu consacrata nel 1888.
La Chiesa di San Bavo fu progettata dall'architetto Carl Weber ed è considerata un punto culminante della sua opera. Si tratta di una basilica a croce in stile neoromanico-gotico. Caratteristica è la alta cupola che appare leggermente sproporzionata. Questo è dovuto al fatto che le due torri occidentali, inizialmente previste, non sono mai state completate a causa della mancanza di fondi.
