Il Canale di Difesa o Canale di Peel fu scavato nel 1939 nella Peel - da Griendtsveen - come parte della Posizione Peel-Raam. Il canale si estende fino al Raam, un ruscello sopra Mill. Funzionava come canale di drenaggio e fossato anticarro, tanto che presto assunse il nome di Canale di Difesa. Sul lato ovest fu costruita una linea difensiva lunga 80 chilometri con campi minati, casematte, ostacoli di filo spinato e trincee dietro di essa. Questa linea fu chiamata Posizione Peel-Raam. La ferrovia presente all'epoca fu dotata all'inizio della guerra di una barriera di asparagi realizzata in fretta su entrambi i lati del ponte a Mill sul Canale di Difesa.
