Le Canal de Défense ou Canal de Peil a été creusé en 1939 dans la Peel - depuis Griendtsveen - comme partie de la Position Peel-Raam. Le canal s'étend jusqu'à la Raam, un petit ruisseau au-dessus de Mill. Il a servi de canal de drainage et de fossé antichars, ce qui lui a rapidement valu le nom de Canal de Défense. Sur le flanc ouest, une ligne de défense de 80 kilomètres a été construite avec des champs de mines, des casemates, des barbelés et, derrière, des tranchées. Cela a été appelé la Position Peel-Raam. La ligne de chemin de fer existante à l'époque a été dotée au début de la guerre d'une barrière à asperges installée à la hâte des deux côtés du pont à Mill sur le Canal de Défense.
