La Piazza dello Zucchero deve il suo nome alla Fabbrica di Zucchero di West che è stata chiusa nel 1964 ma è stata demolita solo negli anni '80.
La foto aerea degli anni '40 offre una vista splendida dell'area circostante. In alto a sinistra puoi vedere i porti del legname, in alto a destra il silo dei cereali lungo l'IJ, in basso a destra la Chiesa di Magdalenakerk, demolita nel 1967, e al centro la fabbrica di zucchero.
