Het Suikerplein dankt haar naam aan Suikerfabriek West die in 1964 is gesloten maar pas in de jaren 1980 is gesloopt.
De luchtfoto uit de jaren 1940 geeft een prachtig overzicht van de omgeving. Linksboven zie je de houthavens, rechts boven de graansilo aan het IJ, rechtsonder de Magdalenakerk, aan het spoor, in 1967 gesloopt, en in het midden de suikerfabriek.
