La spiaggia di Nieuwvliet è interrotta a metà da una riserva naturale di 55 ettari: la Verdronken Zwarte Polder. Una zona di alto andamento con un'apertura nella fila di dune coperte di boscaglia. Così un creek entra e rende quest'area un luogo con elementi sia salati che dolci.
La Verdronken Zwarte Polder ha tutto: una storia culturale, diversi tipi di paesaggio, come fango, schorre e dune e una grande diversità di piante e animali. Chi cerca varietà deve visitare quest'area. Vuoi sapere da dove deriva il nome? L'area è letteralmente una polder sommersa. Nel 1623 fu creata la Zwarte Polder. Questa polder è stata allagata nel 1802. Da qui il nome: Verdronken Zwarte Polder.
Gli schorre si sono formati grazie all'acqua di mare che entra ed esce. Questo ha creato canali nei precedenti campi e ha depositato argilla e limo. Qui è nato uno schor. Il vento ha fatto sì che i resti della diga fossero coperti di sabbia. Così sono nate le dune lato mare.
Attraverso la slufter, l'apertura nella fila di dune, il mare entra ancora nell'area. Molti metri cubi di sabbia fluiscono nell'area. Lo schor cresce così in rapida successione. Questo fa sì che l'area raramente venga completamente sommersa. Ne consegue un progressivo addolcimento dell'area.
