Il polder fu arginato nel 1510 da Philip van Kleef e originariamente si chiamava Groot-Breskenspolder.
Nel 1517, il villaggio di Breskens fu fondato nell'angolo sud-est di questo polder. Quando anche il Jong-Breskenspolder fu arginato nel 1527, il Groot-Breskenspolder fu gradualmente ribattezzato Oud-Breskenspolder. La sua superficie è attualmente di 567 ha.
Dal 2012 parte del polder sarà trasformata in un'area naturale e ricreativa chiamata Waterdunen. Il polder si trova a NAP +1.5 m ed è quindi scavato con canali fino ad una profondità di NAP -2 m. Il polder agricolo fresco , che è ancora relativamente fresco fino a grandi profondità , diventerà una zona di acqua salata . Il terreno salinizzerà ulteriormente. Da lì , le acque sotterranee più fresche saranno spostate nell'entroterra da acqua più salata in una certa misura.
