Il concerto originale di Concertgebouw ad Haarlem fu costruito e progettato dall'architetto Adrianus van der Steur tra il 1872 e il 1873. La società maschile "Vereeniging", fondata nel 1856, era il proprietario e organizzava concerti. Il nuovo edificio sostituì una fila di edifici in Lange Begijnestraat e Wijde Appelaarsteeg e aprì nel giugno del 1873. Dopo i lavori di ristrutturazione del 1882 e del 1894, la società si ritirò dalle attività culturali nel 1920. Il comune di Haarlem prese possesso dell'edificio e lo ampliò nel 1922 con un organo da concerto di Aristide Cavaillé-Coll, installato nel 1924 dopo il restauro. La Grote Zaal fungeva da sede per la Haarlemsche Orkest Vereniging, in seguito l'Orchestra filarmonica del Noordholland. Negli anni '70 il comune assunse la gestione e realizzò ristrutturazioni nel 1973, 1977 e 1986.
