Het oorspronkelijke Concertgebouw in Haarlem werd in 1872-1873 gebouwd en ontworpen door architect Adrianus van der Steur. De herensociëteit "Vereeniging", opgericht in 1856, was de eigenaar en organiseerde concerten. Het nieuwe gebouw verving een rij panden in de Lange Begijnestraat en Wijde Appelaarsteeg en opende in juni 1873. Na verbouwingen in 1882 en 1894 trok de sociëteit zich in 1920 terug uit culturele activiteiten. De gemeente Haarlem nam het gebouw over en breidde het uit in 1922 met een concertorgel van Aristide Cavaillé-Coll, in 1924 geïnstalleerd na restauratie. De Grote Zaal diende als thuisbasis voor de Haarlemsche Orkest Vereniging, later het Noordhollands Philharmonisch Orkest. De gemeente nam in de jaren zeventig de exploitatie over en voerde verbouwingen uit in 1973, 1977 en 1986.
