El original Concertgebouw en Haarlem fue construido y diseñado por el arquitecto Adrianus van der Steur entre 1872 y 1873. La sociedad de caballeros "Vereeniging", fundada en 1856, era la propietaria y organizaba conciertos. El nuevo edificio reemplazó una fila de propiedades en la Lange Begijnestraat y la Wijde Appelaarsteeg y se inauguró en junio de 1873. Tras renovaciones en 1882 y 1894, la sociedad se retiró de las actividades culturales en 1920. El municipio de Haarlem asumió el edificio y lo amplió en 1922 con un órgano de concierto de Aristide Cavaillé-Coll, instalado en 1924 tras su restauración. La Gran Sala sirvió como sede de la Haarlemsche Orkest Vereniging, más tarde la Orquesta Filarmónica de Noordholland. El municipio asumió la gestión en los años setenta y realizó renovaciones en 1973, 1977 y 1986.
