Il tasso è un arbusto perenne sempreverde con bacche rosse in autunno. Tutte le parti del tasso contengono la sostanza tossica tassina, ad eccezione dei involucri delle sementi (falsi frutti). Quelle bacche (solo la polpa!) sono addirittura commestibili e hanno un sapore dolce. La polpa è in realtà l'involucro del seme. Il nocciolo della bacca, ovvero il seme, è molto tossico per gli esseri umani, mentre per gli uccelli (soprattutto i merli) è molto nutriente. Gli aghi del Taxus baccata contengono la base della materia prima per la chemioterapia contro il cancro. Solo i rametti e le foglie che hanno un anno d'età sono utilizzabili.
