De taxus is een groenblijvende vaste struik met in het najaar rode besjes. Alle delen van de taxus bevatten de giftige stof taxine, met uitzondering van de zaadkragen (schijnbessen). Die bessen (alleen het vruchtvlees!) zijn zelfs eetbaar en hebben een zoete smaak. Het vruchtvlees is eigenlijk het zaadomhulsel. De pit in de bes, oftewel het zaad, is voor mensen zeer giftig, voor vogels (vooral merels) juist zeer voedzaam. De naalden van de taxus baccata bevatten dé basis grondstof voor chemotherapie tegen kanker. Alleen de takjes en het blad dat één jaar oud is, zijn bruikbaar. Bron: https://www.taxustopper.nl/
