Viene fondata nel 1973, per onorare tali soggetti. Accanto alla Hall of Fame, opera un museo a Alexandria , e una scuola a Akron , e sponsorizza programmi educativi.
Al 2020 sono 603 gli inventori introdotti viventi e non. Un comitato decide annualmente chi introdurre, detentori di brevetti statunitensi.
