La Pearl Street Station fu la prima centrale elettrica commerciale statunitense. Si trovava al 255-257 di Pearl Street a Manhattan, su un sito di 50 per 100 piedi, appena a sud di Fulton Street e alimentata a carbone. Iniziò con sei dinamo e cominciò a generare elettricità il 4 settembre 1882, servendo un carico iniziale di 400 lampade per 82 clienti. Nel 1884, la Pearl Street Station serviva 508 clienti con 10.164 lampade. La stazione fu costruita dalla Edison Illuminating Company, sotto la direzione di Francis Upton, assunto da Thomas Edison.
La stazione era originariamente alimentata da motori a vapore ad alta velocità Porter-Allen su misura, progettati per fornire 175 cavalli vapore a 700 rpm, ma questi si rivelarono inaffidabili con i loro delicati regolatori. Furono rimossi e sostituiti da nuovi motori di Armington & Sims che si rivelarono molto più adatti per le dinamo di Edison.
