Pearl Street Station was de eerste commerciële centrale energiecentrale in de VS. Het bevond zich op 255-257 Pearl Street in Manhattan op een terrein van 50 bij 100 voet, net ten zuiden van Fulton Street en werd opgestookt met steenkool. Het begon met zes dynamo's en begon op 4 september 1882 elektriciteit te genereren, met een initiële belasting van 400 lampen bij 82 klanten. In 1884 bediende Pearl Street Station 508 klanten met 10.164 lampen. Het station werd gebouwd door de Edison Illuminating Company, onder leiding van Francis Upton, ingehuurd door Thomas Edison.
Het station werd oorspronkelijk aangedreven door op maat gemaakte Porter-Allen hogesnelheidsstoommachines, ontworpen om 175 pk bij 700 tpm te leveren, maar deze bleken onbetrouwbaar door hun gevoelige gouverneurs. Ze werden verwijderd en vervangen door nieuwe machines van Armington & Sims die veel geschikter bleken voor Edison's dynamo's.
