Les travaux de construction du théâtre commencent en 1738 mais, retardés par de nombreux problèmes (guerres, détournements de fonds...), la première représentation théâtrale n'a lieu que 14 ans plus tard. C’est toutefois le plus ancien théâtre de France encore en activité aujourd’hui.
Ouvert selon programmation.
Actuellement en travaux, la programmation est délocalisée hors les murs.
