Het station vormt het einde van de lijn uit Rosenheim, die als Onder-Inntalspoor verder naar Innsbruck leidt.
In 1858 werd de spoorlijn Rosenheim–Kufstein–Innsbruck geopend en in 1876 werd het station Kufstein gebouwd, dat in 1980 volledig werd vervangen door een voor die tijd modern gebouw. Het station is een Oostenrijks-Duitse grensstation tussen ÖBB en DB.
