Oorspronkelijk werd in 1893 een voorlopige kapel gebouwd op de plaats van het huidige Institut Champagnat, dat op een steenworp afstand ligt. Door de toenemende verstedelijking van de Helmetwijk moest er echter een grotere kerk komen. Daarom werd in 1901 de Heilige Familiekerk gebouwd. Om financiële redenen werd in eerste instantie alleen het middelste gedeelte van de kerk in neogotische stijl opgetrokken. Pas dertig jaar later zou de kerk voltooid worden met een 60 meter hoge klokkentoren in art-decostijl.
