Essex Farm Cemetery werd genoemd naar een boerderij op deze plaats, die op de Britse stafkaarten vermeld stond als Essex Farm. Hier liggen 1199 gesneuvelden uit het Commonwealth begraven. In de bunkers naast de hoeve schreef de Canadese dokter John McCrae op 3 mei 1915 het wereldwijd beroemde gedicht 'In Flanders Fields'. Hij overleed op 28 januari 1918 aan long- en hersenvliesontsteking en werd begraven in Wimereux (Frankrijk).
