Cimitero di Essex Farm prende il nome da un fattoria in questo luogo, che era segnata sulle mappe militari britanniche come Essex Farm. Qui sono sepolti 1199 caduti del Commonwealth. Nei rifugi accanto alla fattoria, il dottor canadese John McCrae scrisse il 3 maggio 1915 la celebre poesia 'In Flanders Fields'. Morì il 28 gennaio 1918 a causa di polmonite e meningite e fu sepolto a Wimereux (Francia).
