Der Essex Farm Cemetery wurde nach einem Bauernhof an diesem Ort benannt, der auf den britischen Stabskarten als Essex Farm verzeichnet war. Hier liegen 1199 Gefallene aus dem Commonwealth begraben. In den Bunkern neben dem Hof schrieb der kanadische Arzt John McCrae am 3. Mai 1915 das weltweit berühmte Gedicht 'In Flanders Fields'. Er starb am 28. Januar 1918 an Lungen- und Hirnhautentzündung und wurde in Wimereux (Frankreich) beigesetzt.
