De Sint-Geertruiabdij werd gesticht in de 13de eeuw.door hertog Hendrik I van Brabant, als abdij voor de reguliere kanunikken van Sint-Augustinus. In de loop der eeuwen volgde haar bestaan de wisselvalligheden en bloei van de stad en van de universiteit. Na de bloei kwam onvermijdelijk het verval in de 18de eeuw met de opheffing van de abdij door de Franse Republiek 1796.
