Bij het begin van de Eerste Wereldoorlog speelde zich hier om half twaalf op donderdag 20 augustus 1914 een drama af. Een troep Duitse ulanen (lansiers of soldaten te paard) had op het station van Lichtaart de telegraaf afgebroken en zich daarna op deze plaats in een hinderlaag gelegd.
Een zestal Belgische gidsen te paard ging hen opzoeken. Vooraan stapte de 21-jarige soldaat Nestor Bayot, afkomstig uit Lens Saint Servais (provincie Luik). Plots kwam hij oog in oog te staan met de vijand. Hij loste twee schoten, maar werd zelf in het hoofd getroffen en viel van zijn paard, dat rechtsomkeer maakte en samen met de medesoldaten ongedeerd kon ontsnappen.
