De Abdij van Affligem was in de 17de eeuw het hoofdkwartier van de Hollandse en Duitse legers. Die waren hier gestationeerd voor de beroemde Slag van Seneffe (1674), een strijd tegen de Fransen. Daar werden maar liefst op één dag 8000 geallieerden gedood en 3 500 Fransen. Na de slag bleven de legers hier nog wat rondhangen in de buurt, met veel miserie als gevolg voor de lokale bevolking. Zo werd de kerk van Mazenzele opgestookt door een afdeling Duitsers en Hollanders. Die stonden nochtans aan "onze" kant, tegen de Franse bezetter. Maar dat bleek relatief te zijn. De kerk werd in brand gestoken en een deel van de huizen platbranden. Al het vee werd gedood en dat alles omdat de Fransen bij hun doortocht niets meer zouden vinden het dorp.
