In de 10e eeuw was de locatie van het huidige kasteel een kasteel omringd door water, dat deel uitmaakte van een gordel van fortificaties langs de Schelde; de kelder uit de 15e eeuw en de toren uit de 16e eeuw zijn de oudste overblijfselen; In 1981 werden het kasteel, het imposante poortgebouw, de oude duiventoren en de elegante hangbrug over de parkvijver beschermd als monumenten.
