Peer is een stad in de Belgische provincie Limburg. De stad heeft ruim 16.000 inwoners. Peer is de hoofdplaats van het kieskanton Peer en behoort tot het gerechtelijk kanton Houthalen-Helchteren.De naam Peer werd voor het eerst vermeld in het Liber Aureus, waarin mogelijk een document uit 725 is overgeschreven, waarin de Heilige Willibrord zijn testament opmaakt. Peer komt daarin voor als Pedero. Latere schrijfwijzen zijn Pirgus en Pyra .Dit is afkomstig van pirgus . Andere bronnen geven dan weer aan dat de naam afkomstig zou zijn van Perre of Parre, wat "omheinde plaats" betekent.
