Het is duidelijk dat de stad haar naam te danken heeft aan de Herk, oorspronkelijk de Arca, een bijrivier van de Tamara (Demer). In 1107 wordt de naam geschreven als Harcke in een pauselijke bul. Daarna was er meestal sprake van Wuest-Herck. Onder Napoleon werd de naam veranderd in Herck-la-Ville om verwarring met Sint-Lambrechts-Herk te vermijden.
